Before 1940 Guadalcanal, site of the first major Allied initiative, had been mentioned by name in The New York Times only about a half-dozen times; several of those were from the 1890s and involved “Baron Henry Foullon von Norbeck, the Austrian scientist and explorer, who with several members of the party he was leading was killed and devoured last summer by the inhabitants of Guadalcanal.” (via Television - ‘The Pacific,’ Shedding Light on World War II in the Pacific - NYTimes.com)
I shot tons of concerts, but it really was not that interesting for me. It is not easy to make an interesting or funny photo of some guy with a guitar in his hand. This photograph takes exception. I knew that when I saw Talking at UCLA 1978 that this was a fucking special moment. They were cosmic and it really shows in this photo of David Bryne. Is there something cool and California in this photo or is it my dream?
Thank you to my dear Tumblr fans for embracing my seventies photographs. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your kind words and feedback. I have not picked up a camera in a couple of decades, but I am going start taking photos again immediately. I already have a digital camera, but I think that I will stick with film. Now all I need to find some real pop culture to photograph. Any ideas?
By the way, I took this photo of Joni Jett at Flookies a baseball and hot dog joint on Ventura blvd in Sherman Oaks. It was 1977 and Joan was 17 and I was 18!
